‘Weather the key in England’- West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharran
Chennai: Climate will have its say and the side that turns up better on a given day will end up getting results, according to former West Indian batsman Alvin Kallicharran.
“There are a couple of top teams, but England is a bit different compared to other countries. Conditions play a key role, weather changes overnight sometimes. In other parts of the world, you can go with a plan and execute it, but in English pitches, to do that is tough. That is the reason why I wouldn’t like to predict on who the favourites are,” said Kallicharran.
West Indies was a powerhouse in the sport in the 70s, securing two WC crowns. Its fiery fast bowlers and belligerent batsmen decimated opposition, sucking the soul out of their adversaries. On what separated the best from the rest, he said, “Ours was well balanced, it is not that easy to put together a team like that. You had six batsmen and they were complemented by good pacers. Those were the times you could produce two teams of the same calibre. You couldn’t afford to fail as someone was always knocking on the door. I am proud to be a part of the national setup which people say is the best in cricket.”
